Rather than eating her sandwiches, Polish artist Milena Korolczuk has recently taken to transforming them into tiny sculptures. Using Wonder Bread as her medium, the Oakland-based artist draws from iconic pop-culture, art, literature, and historic figures to inspire each detailed face. She uses slices of classic white Wonder Bread and a steady hand to shape the tiny balls into something unique and unexpected.
Within each blob of bread, the strands of hair, accurately shaped eyes, noses, and ears, and perfectly developed cheekbones depict characters like Plato and Warhol. Korolczuk describes the monochromatic shapes as symbolic and material, marked with nutritional value. Within the many crumbs of an average breakfast, she finds inspiration to shape her meals into these remarkable sculptures. For presentation, the faces are photographed in their messy environments, piled among the remaining crusts that didn’t make the cut for the final piece.
